Reverend Jesse Jackson

Our statement on the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson:

On behalf of the Pilgrim Church I offer our deepest condolences to the Jackson family on the passing of the Reverend Jesse Jackson who was a truly great civil rights leader. He lit the flame for social justice in so many hearts across the globe. His warmth and charismatic style of leadership engaged not only minds but our hearts also.

We were greatly honoured to host the Reverend Jesse Jackson twice during his Colours of Equanomics UK tours. I recall spending some time with Rev. Jackson and his team on the tour bus as they travelled between venues, I was surprised by the laughter and good humour shared they shared in private; it was a life lesson for me – always allow room for joy, love and laughter in your work, no matter how important the assignment. As always, on arrival Rev. Jackson delivered an inspirational speech in which he detailed his framework for moving forward the dial on Economic equality. In the same meeting, Rev. Jackson raised and held up the hands of Rev. Canon Weaver CBE. This was a profound moment for me as the world-famous Rev. Jackson stood shoulder to shoulder with our own local champion and inspirational leader Rev. Weaver.

Reverend Jackson’s association with the UK struggle for social justice for people from all racial and social backgrounds is greatly appreciated. His legacy lives on as we continue to, “Keep hope alive!”
